When this post was first created, a girl named Baileysmummy was making tons of threads entitled "what do you think of Irish people?" or "what do you think of Italians" etc...so I (vandy) decided to create something a bit contraversial...a "what do you think of Catholics?" discussion topic. Well, it evolved into this, a huge discussion of Catholicism, so Ally changed the title to fit it when she was the lone mod in this category. I decided to add in this explanation, so that no one thought that I thought that Catholicism was a joke or a fad.

why not? it seems to be the fad lately.

you're right petra... my deepest appologies... So, to the point- I think catholics are a great bounch of ppl! of course being jewish I know little about their "unique-ness" in and any case I think it's silly to define someone based on his/hers relegion...

oh just this one thing- I didn't know I can't enter the san-pietro cathedral in the Vatikan in shorts!! so I had to buy the stupidest pairs of pants you've ever seen... was well worth it thogh!

catholicism is a fad lately? i hadn't noticed...hmmm
well for any who are wondering why the catholics are unique...go rent dogma. i know basically the entire movie is a big joke on catholicism but having been raised a catholic it just captures the whole religion so well if you have a sense of humor.
otherwise ull just be offended and i believe its actally banned by the catholic church

ok...im from northern ireland...where protestants h8 catholics and kill catholics and where catholics h8 protestants and kill protestants. I was raised in an area where there were alot on influences telling me to hate catholics. Then i went to a mixed school when i was 12 and met one for the 1st tym. She lived a mile away from me and because of the segregation i had never met her. Im friends with many of them now and its grand. But im not allowed to have a relationship with one (ive defied it many times) and ive seen what happens if you do. A couple were chased outta my village because the man was catholic.

Isnt it a terrible way to live??

Aw, LPE, that is awful.
I was baptised and brought up as a Catholic, I also go to a Catholic school.
I wouldn't say I was a "worshipper" more of a non-practising catholic.
I struggle, in a way, to keep my faith and stuff so I have immense respect for most Catholics, not all, like the people in LPE's post...

You see im not like that at all. Ive never been 'kill all catholics' as im more open-minded than all the people around here. and its a pity im the only one.

Im a wiccan...although im not allowed to practise as long as im in my parents house...so bring on 18!

do tell me what the hell is catholic about? please all you people who claim to be catholic tell me what your religion is all about? tell me why the hell you have to tell your sins to a preist so that the preist can "tell God" so that your sins would be forgivien! tell me why it is that you catholics beleive that you have to do good things to get you into heaven!!! cause you know that the whole reason that jesus christ came down to this earth to die for our sins, and if you say that the only way to get to heaven is by doing good deads then the purpose of jesus is compleatly useless!!!!! if that was true, that you had to do good things to get to heaven makeing jesus useless, then the whole base of christanity, what catholisism is based off of is completly unnessesary!!! jesus unnessesary? i dont think so.. also you can never be good enough to get in to heaven!!!! so dont try, that is what jesus is for!!! tell me one more thing why is it that you catholics take such offence when people comment or dissagree with you when you dont even know what the hell it is that you believe in!!! please argue with me!

do tell me what the hell is catholic about?

Well, next to Greek-orthodox christianity and a small group of christian jews; catholicism is the first religion to have grown out of the following of christ.

tell me why the hell you have to tell your sins to a preist so that the preist can "tell God" so that your sins would be forgivien!

Confession is meant for two things: first of all to get the sinner to understand and admit that he or she sinned (which is important because); second: to grant forgiveness. You cannot be forgiven by anyone (God or any other man or instance) if you do not ask for it first.

tell me why it is that you catholics beleive that you have to do good things to get you into heaven!!!

Catholics have to follow Christ. To do good is merely to praise God.

cause you know that the whole reason that jesus christ came down to this earth to die for our sins, and if you say that the only way to get to heaven is by doing good deads then the purpose of jesus is compleatly useless!!!!!

Jesus Christ died at the Cross to open the way to heaven - but no christian, catholic or otherwise, reaches heaven before the Day of the Last Judgement (after the Apocalypse).
Christ died at the cross to show that God suffers as mortals do, but we are still born with the original sin - nothing much has changed there.

also you can never be good enough to get in to heaven!!!! so dont try, that is what jesus is for!!!

Excuse me? If you follow Christ in spirit and in heart; God will see that you are truly his child and he will forgive you your since on judgement day - what religion are you anyway?

tell me one more thing why is it that you catholics take such offence when people comment or dissagree with you when you dont even know what the hell it is that you believe in!!!

I think it's you who doesn't know what catholicism is about... CLEARLY

OMG! Meshel...you had no right to take a rant at Catholism when you obivously have absoultly no idea as to what it or even Christianity is! Im atheist and even i, who doesnt believe in god (incase you dont know what an athiest is either), would never diss a religion...especially one that i have little understanding about! Just thought id get that out there...

I don't exactly have the highest opinions on catholics, mainly because I am 1. a witch who was very stupid and trusting and 2. a person who has been persecuted by both catholics and protestants for all my life due to my parent's atheism and my own paganism. I have no problem with them otherwise, as long as they leave me alone.

u mean u follow the dogmas of religions, or u investigate religions? cuz it'd be pretty hard to observe every religion closely...in terms of following their doctrines...

Catholics however, do give this 'forgiveness' you talk of, but they are obsessed with guilt. Alot of Catholics make themselves feel guilty for living. One of my cousins was abslutely obsessed with the idea that she was the biggest sinner on the planet, and her catholisism was to blame for that - she started to do things to punish herself by doing things like not not eating for a day etc etc (think Dobby from Harry Potter!) And ended up a very disturbed teenager in therapy. She is now 32 and a complete atheist. I just don't think it is healthy to feel you have to live by all these ridiculous, impossible rules.

well, then, with all respect for your cousin, but then she didn't really understadn what catholicism is about, Ally, cause really, it's teh protestants whoa re talking about Sin all teh time, the catholics merely accept the fact that we are all born sinners, and when they have done somethig wrong, you can go to confess it, but really, it is not something we are supposed to think about all the time...
