When this post was first created, a girl named Baileysmummy was making tons of threads entitled "what do you think of Irish people?" or "what do you think of Italians" etc...so I (vandy) decided to create something a bit contraversial...a "what do you think of Catholics?" discussion topic. Well, it evolved into this, a huge discussion of Catholicism, so Ally changed the title to fit it when she was the lone mod in this category. I decided to add in this explanation, so that no one thought that I thought that Catholicism was a joke or a fad.

why not? it seems to be the fad lately.

I was raised Catholic, and I guess I still am Catholic...I don't agree with a lot of the dogma, but...what can ya do?

I think that the last couple of years have been really hard on the Church, because of all of the accusations against priests, but that's the time when people of the Church should bond together the most and support the priests, cuz not all of them are pedophiles.

im a catholic, probably due to an irish part of my mum's family. she goes to church and [by default] i used to go with her. I stopped going there when i was about 14, and since then I've broken some rules of the church ... and because i dont agree with a lot of catholic teaching and religion its not much a part of my life now.

i still go to Mass at christmas and easter though, it can be good to go sometimes, whatever your opinions, it makes sure u dont entirely shut spirituality or god out of your life, which would be a mistake i think

I don't go to the mass either, I don't like the priest here!! Ok, sounds strange, but he's realy not worthy to be a priest!!
For intance: when I was younger I helped with the Christmass-mass and during the reheral, he took his dog into the church, unleached. Now I'm terrably scared of dougs, cause I was bitten by one in my face, and I asked the priest of he could put him away. he put his leach on, but I still had to pass him every 5 minutes!!! next rehersal, he brought him back again, unleached...So, I don't go to mass in a church with a priest like that!! When he'll be gone (hopefully soon, cause the whole village hates him!!), I think I might go again!

now we have to put a stop to all these "what do you think..."s. It doesn't matter anyways. Everyone's always saying how we shouldn't label and generalize but we have all these. Madness, hipocracy is madness!

Plantagenet, im not sure if it will work or is possible but if the Bishop or someone who 'rules' your area has complaints about a priest conduct they may move him away.

Also just reading some news earlier and in N.France a Cathloic Church refused to marry a couple due to them not wanting children as the wife has a nervous condition and could pass it on.

Catholics dont seem to know what they believe in. Its all motions for them. Like the rosary. They have to use it to keep track of the number of prayers they are saying. It has no meaning to them like I said its all motion. And the idols they have of all the saints and mary, thats completely against what God said. He said not to have any idols yet they have tons, he said hes your only God, yet they pray to mary and go to a priest for forgiveness instead of going to God. And the whole idea of no meat of Friday? Where on earth did they get that idea from and since when is fish not a meat? Fish doesnt grow of trees

I'm not proud to be a catholic, but I am what I am. I just pretend I'm not a catholic because I don't see a point to religion of any sort.

I have Catholic Bibles

Since when are Catholic Bibles different from others?

And if you do know all of it, why do you think it's dumb to worship the Virgin? What is wrong with rosaries? And why do you think that those things are the most important ones for Catholics?

I didnt say it was dumb to worship the Virgin but God said not to worship anyone else but him. Argue with God about it, not me.

Catholic bibles are different. Christians use the Holy Bible while you have your very own.

i have no problem with catholics. i just dont think they completely understand what they are practicing. I think its all motions for them. I am sure there are bond to be some that do know what they are doing and accept that its against what God said. But alot actually believe they are a form of Christianity.

ahum, catholicism is actually the second official form of christianity, the first being the greek-orthodox or Bynzantine teaching... all others are considered herricy (arianism and such)

and I'm very sorry to say this, but it is a wide known fact that no one who practices a religion wholely understands what he or she is doing - that's why we call it faith... if you think you're different, you're a scientist

as for the Virgin Mary, God - according to the Concillies (yeah, I'm too lazy to look it up in English) that were held throughout the 6th up to the 10th century - only says that to be true to Him is to worship only Him because in those days God was a jealous God (he had to protect his faith from the many others around hom)... when all the world had become christian (or almost) God could relax a little... well, all this in theological terms of course

I used to think Catholics didn't understand their own faith

Then I realized I didn't understand the Catholic faith

There are so many misconceptions out there

For one, we don't worship Mary

We're not supposed to, anyhow

Anyone who does is not following the faith correctly

Ahhhh screw it nevermind
