woe to the person that believes everything they seen and hear on television

you avoid the fact that ... the media only covers what which they deem 'interesting' ... nothing good seems interesting anymore

Hmmm, I think you didn't make your point clearly enough. You implied in your first statement that media is lying, I responded to that.

Besides, I don't think that media have to cover everything. They should draw attention to those things that are out of order. To put you with your nose on the facts so to say. You can't just ignore them by saying, "oh well, who believes everything" or "the media doesn't cover everything" These facts remain and they reflect the flaws of a society.

And it's not that I base my opinion on media alone. I base it on personal contacts with americans and their structures as well.

I do realise that as soon as money is involved, media doesn't have to be objective.

But that is exactly the point: in Europe you have 2-3 different kinds of media. First there is the "Boulevard press". They are not so much interested in the truth, but want to sell. Big headlines, "shocking" facts, little background.
Then there is the serious press, but not necessarily objective. They were mostly connected to a political party in the past and though the articles are well-researched and offer decent background, they are often reporting things from a point of view. It's something that everyone knows, you take that into account.
And then there is the independent press. It's almost a matter of honour to be objective, precise, well-researched.

As far as news coverage on TV is concerned: there are often 2 "channels". First, there are private stations. They get their money from advertising. The more serious ones offer a good, decent alternative to the "official" ones. The themes are a bit more popular, but it's still decent coverage.
The second kind of stations are "official" ones. There are rules about what they broadcast, guaranteeing full objectivity and a certain diversity. They get their money from the state, but are free to do with it what they want, within the frame of diversity and objectivity. There are usually no ads, or only very little in short blocks, and never interrupting a program. There is no money involved here, so they don't have to be populising.

Well, that goes for a number of european countries that I know .. I can't speak for the whole of Europe.

it's about the "I am from the US so I don't need to speak your language, or adapt a bit to your culture or consider that there are other ways than mine" mentality that drives me up the walls.

I live in the US, so I haven't had to deal with that exactly, but I can imagine how insane that could drive a person after experiencing it a few times. I haven't had the chance to travel much, but I've always tried to learn some of the local language whenever the opportunity presented itself.

It's not difficult, and, in my experience, the people who live in the country you're visiting don't expect you to be fluent, but the effort is appreciated.

How hard is it to say 'Excusez-moi, mais est-ce que vous savez où la métro se trouve?' (Well, that might not be a fair example.. but, it's not like places don't sell phrasebooks! You probably don't even have to buy one if you happen to find the right website.)

Though, I'll take any chance that's given to me to learn a foreign language, so I may be the counterexample.

Well I live in a "3rd world country" and i have had the opportunities to travel i would say a lot for my age... Almost always i've gone to the US, i mean, for a lot of ppl it is like i huge thing say "I've been in America" but I dont really thing id that awesome.
I mean when you go there being a foreing you are threated bad a lot of time specially on the airports. The ask you EVERY personal dtail of you life, it's like if you have to open your diary to a stranger and that doesn't really make someone feel "welcomed"... Also happens that a lot of people gets angry if you dont speak the language perfectly, thay even scold you!

I do NOT mean that everyone is rude, actually i've been aronud amazing people that make you feel great and i have the most wonderful memories of the times I've been there!

Once I was in a class and somhow we ended up talking about the Iraq war... I noticed mosst of the kids (like 14 to 17) are blinded with lies... the keep thinking that the US is in Iraq because of the supposed guns they were looking for but please people! think a little bit... have they found something?? the only thing that US troops have done there is destroy every single family and every single life; kill people and lose time & money... how would you feel if you are watching tv and the in a second you have to run trying to save your sister because a bomb took your home away while she was sleeping??

I dont have nothing in personal with US, actually i think it is an Awesome country and i admire the organizetion they have reached and everythjing they've got but please come back to earth... the goverment is in a cloud of power and i think the world has hed enough of that..

BY THEIR ACTIONS
what non-citizens think of the US

Legally,or illegally,the masses

This is IT
where it's at
the land "flowing with milk and honey"

no one(except maybe Michael Jackson)
is trying to run away from here.

Doesn't matter what they SAY
