amateur art project, acrylics on canvas

i havent had an art class since elementary school and now my teacher is asking us to do a three week art project. id like to paint, like acrylics on canvas, but i have no idea what im doing, like what types of brushes to use, if i need to manipulate the paint, what to do if i mess up, etc. ANY advise woult be AWESOME. i dont want my project to look like a 5 year old did it.
