Ok first off, I know more or less nothing about American football (I live in the UK).

But which sport do you think is "tougher"? American football may look bad but they wear so much padding! And the have bloody helmets! And I also think rugby is a better game because it has less pauses in play. And I like rugby because I'm Welsh.

Let's have some opinions of some American peeps!

Sorry dude, I'm an Englishman in South Carolina...Conway City near Myrtle Beach. I'm lovin' the Basketball play-off's right now, having a great time with the Baseball also (Manny is soooo cool!!!)...both great sports, and wish I could get more feeds of the Stanley Cup play-off's....Hockey is a hell of a game!!!

My awareness comment? I'm here dude...I speak to Americans each day...and it's disturbing how unaware many are about the world outside of these borders...and not just in a sporting sense;-)

Baseball WORLD Series????? Basketball WORLD Champions???? That's the height of high mindedness and arrogance my friend...so get it right.

At least when the rest of the world declares a world champion, they've played against other national teams.

BUT, I want my comments to be understood within the confines of sports. I'm not anti-American in any way...jeez, my girl's American...and fine too:-)

Watched Rugby League? Gaelic Football? Aussie Rules Footy? I'm guessing not, as you'd be awar of the brutality present in those games and perhaps make mention of it for the purposes of perspective.

So...relax, and don't be goin' paranoid on the rest of the world.

Did someone say that American football is more popular? Because it's funny how it's only played in America, whereas rugby is played by pretty much everyone else..

If American Football players came up against the likes of Laurence Dallaglio or Martin Johnson they would s--t a brick.

I think American Football is all talk. It is so frustraiting to watch a game that stops so often that the game doesn't flow at all. In Football (and by this I mean soccer, i.e. real football) it's frustraiting enough when managers make substitutions in extra time to wear the clock down. I cant imagine having to put up with stopages every time something happens. Rugby actually requires stamina because you dont get a rest every 10 seconds.

I'll speak for most Americans and say that we don't really care how popular our football is elsewhere... I don't care anyways. It's an amazingly entertaining and awesome sport and if other want to miss out, that's fine by me.

And it is not arrogant to say things like NBA WORLD champs or WORLD Series champs... because the bes tof those sports is played in America and I think everyone would agree on that. America is home to the world's best baseball and basketball players, so I don't see why that is even an issue.

And being an NFL player takes tremendous stamina, because every play must be 100%. I mean, you see a sport like soccer with few stoppages but the players aren't going 100% all the time.

I'm an American, and I love football. I agree the NFL is more specialized, but I don't see that as a problem. The strategy is incredible in the NFL and every single play is huge. Wearing pads doesn't make the guyd any less tough (try having a metal helmet piece drilled into your bare forearm)... I actually really really hope the NFL doesn't expand, I'd love to keep it in America.

um, world competition results speak highly against that

America doesn't claim to have world champions, the leagues like the NBA, MLB, and NFL claim their champs to be world champions. so why don't you get it right.

Tim, explain this... If America doesn't have the world's greatest basketball and baseball, then why do so many foreign people come here to play?

Top American players never go to other countries to play. Those not good enough to play here go to other countries where the play isn't as good. In other countries, some of the best players come here to play...those not good enough to play in other countries know they can not compete here in America.

Not really arguable... I mean, the world's best play in the USA. The end

They play here for the money. Plenty of American players play in European leagues, you just never hear about it because there isn't any fame and fortune associated with it.

Please don't be so naive...

Haha, cmon now, everyone knows the best basketball and baseball are played here. Sure money matters, but why do washed up, crappy American players go to Japan or Italy and do awesome?

Actually, if American football is anything like "soccer," players are probably not moving out of America because they're staying where the money is. But, there are still players that do move, David Beckham, for one thing. Owen Hargreaves played for a German Team (Beir Munich, i think) for ages. Michael Owen was at Real Madrid etc. American Football is played over here, the only problem is no-one cares.

The fact that the worlds best players are in the only country that actually plays the sport doesn't mean anything. Anything that has "World Championships" and "American" in the same title is arrogant, period. World American Football Championships... lol. Hey, the English Premiership is the biggest football (and I mean real football) league in the world, maybe the FA cup should be renamed?

Don't give me the American's play 100% all the time BS. Just because footballers and rugby players aren't tackling or with the ball constantly doesn't been they're not putting the effort in. And American football players aren't tackling or running with the ball all the time anyway, so they don't have to work any harder than any other sportsperson while the game is actually moving (which is rare anyway).

which will be true for any person being paid for anything. if you wash goddamn cars all day for $8 an hour, and someone else offers you the chance to do the same thing for $4 an hour, what the hell are you going to do.

but the point is the best league is going to bring in the most money. people are going to pay to see the best which gives teams more money to seduce better players.

as much as i hate basketball, even more so professional basketball, the nba has better players than any other league i've ever seen. the only problem is when we put our best out there for olympics or what have you, they all want to play like individual superstars instead of a team. it dosent matter how good you are when you play like that, you could lose to parapalegic nuns. but individually, our players are better and the best from around the world want to play here. because of the money and the chance to compete with the best

Were we even talking about that? Like I said, football is only played here and I am happy about that. It's a terrific sport and brings in tons of money. I see no reason to expand.

Why shouldn't the USA have "World" Championships? I mean, the best basketball and baseball players play here, so where is the problem?

The problem is that it is ignorant and a reflection of how America sees itself as the only place the matters in the world (watch Team America). A world championship where every team is American? Yeah, because that's as far as the typical American's Geographic knowledge goes, from alot of the people I've seen:

Hey, my friend went to England the other year! She has long blonde hair, did you see her?

And I do believe someone said that when American basketball players go to the Olympics and such, they fail. That IS actually played against the rest of the world, and that DOES show that America does not have the best players in the world anyway.

Please, have some knowledge! Enlighten yourself a little bit...

Guess what? Those international players in the olympics... the best ones play in the NBA!!! HAHAHA.

Lol, why does America sends its worst players to other countries while they send their best to play here? Why do terrible players here go to foreign countries and dominate? Explain.

Because its not a world competition, despite the name they are still only national champions

I don't dispute the fact that many good players come to play in the US and that many good players come from the US; but that doesn't make them the best seeing as there is no world football league to compare anyone, and like its been said we lose in the Olympics in basketball (mostly from our inability to adapt to European style, not from selfish players)

well since we studied both american football and rugby in my anthro class, I think its safe for me to say that Rugby is the tougher of the two as well as the more popular.

& the all blacks with the haka is tres interesting.

But what do I know.

I don't give a damn if the "best" players dont go to the olympics. The fact is, the only time America actually plays other countries at it, it loses. That's all there is to it.

The reason other countries send their best players over there is because it's the biggest and most wealthy league, therefore it makes more economic sense. It doesnt make the "world" series any less pig ignorant though.

For one, Americans rarely send all of their best players to play in the Olympics. Mainly because the Olympics aren't really important, and each player is millions of dollars worth of investments and quite frankly, are'nt worth the risk of injury just to play in an Olympic game.

Secondly, WHAT DON'T YOU GUYS UNDERSTAND??? In the Olynpics, the guys who play for teams other than the USA...their best players play in the NBA! Lol, is that hard for you guys to understand? The best players in the entire world play in the USA. You guys just keep ignoring that nice little fact that completely takes the whole "Well, USA loses in the Olypics sometimes!!!" arguement out of the equation. Since the USA is losing to guys who play in the NBA, it really doesn't matter. You're kinda fighting my side of the argument there.

Sure, the best players of other leagues come over here for more money, but the performance of players who switch leagues shows how much better the USA is. It isn't even close.

You've got dominant superstars in Japan come over here and do not show the dominance they had in Japan. Then you see complete bums here who can't even make MLB rosters go to Japan and dominate their league.

So the MLBs worst players are superstars in Japan once they head over there... While Japan's best come here and most are just average players

Not at all. Some are exceptions, mainly just Ichiro.

The more you post the more I see how little you know about the subject at hand.

Kaz Matsui, Shinjo, Ishii, Yoshii, etc...

Why do MLB's worst players go to Japan and not only make teams, but become great players? Hmmm, they are grea tplayers in Japan but aren't anything over here. Gee guys, wonder which league is better. That's a reeeeal tough one to figure out.
