Ok first off, I know more or less nothing about American football (I live in the UK).

But which sport do you think is "tougher"? American football may look bad but they wear so much padding! And the have bloody helmets! And I also think rugby is a better game because it has less pauses in play. And I like rugby because I'm Welsh.

Let's have some opinions of some American peeps!

and american footballers aren't only tough, there gooooood:

1. Joe Theismann, ESPN Announcer and Former NFL Quarterback
"Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein." (Norman? Is he related to Albert? I guess we know who isn't a genius.)

2. Torrin Polk, University of Houston Wide Receiver
When asked about his coach John Jenkins, he said...
"He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings." (And next he's going to let them paint their fingernails.)

3. Former New Orleans Saints RB George Rogers
“I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first” (Now I haven't been in a math class in 10-some odd years, but I do believe 1,000 still comes before 1,500.)

4. Houston Oilers Head Coach Bill Peterson:
"You guys line up alphabetically by height."
Bill also gets extra credit for these inspirational words:
"Men, I want you just thinking of one word all season. One word and one word only: Super Bowl."

5. Dick Butkus, Former Chicago Bears Linebacker
"I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was important -- like a league game." (Hey, at least he holds back in practice!)

6. William Perry, Former Chicago Bears Defensive Tackle
"I've been big ever since I was little." (Hmmm... okay.)

7. Jerry Rice, San Francisco 49ers Wide Receiver
"I feel like I'm the best, but you're not going to get me to say that." (Darn... you got us Jerry!)

8. Lee Corso, College Football Analyst
"Hawaii doesn't win many games in the United States." (Here's a hint for you Lee... Hawaii is in the United States.)

9. Bob Hoying, Ohio State Buckeyes Quarterback
After winning a Big Ten title for Ohio State...
"I'm really happy for Coach Cooper and the guys who've been around here for six or seven years, especially our seniors." (And the fourth grade was the best three years of his life!)

10. Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson, Former Dallas Cowboys Linebacker
Commenting on Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw’s intelligence...
“He couldn’t spell cat if you spotted him the C and the T.”

Well I'm german and play neither of the sports but i root for rugby. People wo say rugby has no hard tackles probably havent watched teams like South Africa or New Zealand play. Rugby may not be as dangerous but thats also becos the people are more careful. As I once heard sum1 say:"football is a gentleman's game, played by lunatics(ok, maybe not the right word but what the heck), while rugby is a lunatics gameplayed by gentlemen", and thats true. There are many ocasions where a guy could be stepped on or what ever and the players are careful. maybe that's because of the way the game is structured. And people do also die in rugby, not as often becos theyr careful, but they could easily break their necks in a scrum, when it collapses. And american football just seems too tactical, and DOES have too many pauses in it. I'm sure americans and canadians and those others who watch it find it exciting. At times it seems like a no holds barred kinda game, like u can do what you like to take the other guy down, and thats why careers are killed as well as the players. I guess the "tougher" sport IS american football, but only because of how dangerous it is.

PS, when I say football, like in my nice quote, unless its preceded by "American" i mean soccer, for you americans. Jeez cant even think of a new word. Since when do you use your feet in American football? And what kind of name is soccer? The english (and the french) call it football, the portuguese speakers call it futebol, the germans say fussball, the dutch (ok not sure bout the spelling but its something like this) voetball. And so on. U guys

heres just a short opinion American interests

American: popular = NBA, NFL, MLB
basketball, football, baseball....

for football, there are a lot of stoppage in the game(stop when theres a foul, when you get a down, when theres a timeout.....)
for baseball, there are also quite a lot of stoppage(waiting to bat, waiting for the pitch to come.....change of halves.....)
for basketball, there are less stoppage(more continous play), but the coach can call timeouts.....

for other sports like soccer and rugby, there are rarely stoppages(except in injury...) its always continous action/play

therefore, Americans can be seen as having "ADD", they need advertisements and stops.... can't watch a continous play......

rugby can't appeal to Americans because of this "condition"......

forgot to add: im an asian(who watched rugby) who moved to america...... miss EPL and rugby.....love my DVR, to fast forward through all those advertisements and stoppages....

Football is more about strategy... where to play/place the ball, to throw or rush or avoid defenders..... if you are going to get sacked or lose yardage, throw the ball away....(-- imho, that is just lame)
and thats why the coaches need so much communication with the players.. and the players must discuss which strategy to use before restarting play....whether to fake a play and go the other way or whatever...

Rugby is more about sustaining power and strategy over >80 minutes continous play.... i dont think NFL players don't have the stamina to last so long on the field...football players just hit each other... then have like 30s of pause time to recover before next play

All you Europeans and Aussie that think American football is a pussy sport, well think again! Lets start out by the whole Pad and Helmet discussion--By 1895 more than 265 players had died from concusions due to the natural stance and way of the game, thats when leather helmets were introduced, you see in American Football if you havent had at least 2 concusions then you are not a true football player, the helmet and pads keeps you from bleeding but DOES not prevent internal injuries such as broken bones and concusions! I have had 2 concusions and the second one i remember getting hit but after that i dont remember anything, i couldnt talk and i didnt know my own name, However i did remember how to play the game and i supposly finished it. the pads only do 2 things, they give you the false reality that you are safe so you start using your self as a bulldozer and a weapon thats why there are so many concusions and deaths in american football every year.
The game is played around a time of year in the U.S where the seasons change rapidly from summer to fall to winter, being from the State of Georgia It is naturally hot. on a regular day u can cook bacon and eggs on the concrete! it is not uncommon for an American football player to die of a heat stroke at practice, i have seen it myself! And up north in New England and the Yankee states, i would like to see you lIttle rugby players in your short shorts play in weatner that is -30 degree celcius. Have you ever heard of the Ice Bowl- the NFL championship game played in 1968 between the dallas cowboys and the green bay packers, it was the coldest game in NFL history(-42)celcius, many players had to get body parts cut off because of frost bite,
And the old days when players wore helmets with no facemasks, in a dogpile it was'nt uncommon for someone to come out of it with cleet marks on his face or no teeth cause the other guy rammed his helmet right up his mouth,

U Euros also should no that these many American pussy football players quit the NFL and college football teams in world war 2,and joined the armed forces so they could bail you out of another war!
I played for my highschool and if you think that american footplayers are slow well you are wrong, to make my team you had to run a 4.7 (thats 40 yards in 4.7 seconds, do the math thats a little over ten yards a second, sounds easy well go and try it), I am not taking any thing out of rugby, its a great sport i enjoy watching it, but to me American Football is better because its not about the big hits and the athletes, its about trying to out think your opponents, whos smarter- an english man once tryed to explain to his country man what american football is-" he said its like chess on a rugby field" and thats exactly what it is!

Dont lecture about American Superiority in WARS

Communist Vietnam Vs Americans = Winner Commi Vietnam

Jihads vs American Forces in Iraq = Winner Jihads

Mexico slowly taking over the united states = PWNED

you guys cant even control your own borders..wow all the "man power in the world" and yet you guys cant even hold off illegals coming into your country..NEWB

China owns you any day seeing as how everything you guys own is made in china.. ROFLCOPTER

aimed at firewatermagic or whatever your name was~ you talk about boxing being a brutality sport? watch PRIDE or K-1. boxing is nothing but politics

UFC is the ONLY entertaining sport coming out of america that the world can enjoy..even then it went downhill because of too many rules..stupid stupid..

besides the fact that "tough NFL" players steriod themselves just as bad as baseball..but of course not everyone does that in their respective sports..

but its quite obvious that americans take whatever they see and transform it and call it their own..baseball = cricket

american football= rugby

soccer = only ignorant americans say that..have fun with your recession..india and multiple european banks have to save you guys now..

Habs, not only is most of what you said inaccurate, but you talk as if you are foreign yet you live in America. I hate it when people freaking complain about how America sucks. Well if you don't like it, if you hate it so much, then leave. It is not like you are forced to stay here. Go live somewhere that will make you happy. And my guess is eventually you'll just find something about that place to complain about there too.

No country is perfect. There are problems everywhere. I like my country. I like living here. I love the world. I want to go visit everywhere. I am greatful for what I have. I could be in an impoverished part of Africa, with no clothes, food, water, housing, sanitation, education, money, medical care, and dying of HIV/AIDS but I'm not.

So back to the topic, I like watching both rugby and american football. I like watching all kinds of sports, I don't care what country it's in or what it's called. Sports are awesome!

ok at a proffesional level

hitting- the styles are COMPLETELY different

in rugby you try to take the guy to the ground sure it might hurt but its not really
impact so much as drag down tackling

in football its crush the opposing player and not concede a inch of territory and with the padding it isnt that much u cover your head wit ha helmet which turns into another weapon and helmet to helmet HURTS most of your mid section is still exposed

kicking in rugby is used alot and w/e thats cool

in football theres 3 times you kick a field goal which is usually a last resort to score

punting which is an absolute last resort to make the other team start thier possession as far away from your end as possible

and kickoffs which is after you score or to start the half and that is madetory to do and it gives the other team the ball and your goal is to keep the mas far away from your end as possible

passing rugby you pass backwards or laterally end of story

football u can lateral at any time but quarterback passing is the main type you see and theres absolutely no doubt football passing is harder even rugby fans yes you you HAVE TO ADMIT its is harder to throw a ball 30 yards ( 90 feet) to 1 guy that is covered by a man whos entire life is devoted to covering guys and making sure they do not catch the ball

overall just because of the money luring the NFL has the best athletes in the world yes 75% of them are greedy as heck but that does not affect their athletic ability and yes i know you will and already have said football players are fat slobs but thats only part true only defensive tackles and offensive lineman are fat but their whole job is getting leverage and pushing people nobody else in NFL is actually FAT

yes rugby players are GREAT athletes and yes they are the best in the world at their job however if a rugby team was to face a football team in american football with a month or 2 of training they would get SPANKED by like 100
the rugby team might get 1 or 2 touchdowns and a couple of field goals yes they can kick i know that

if a football team were to face a rugby team at rugby with a few months of training i think the football team would fare better just because of the running backs and Wide receiver and defensive backs ability to run the ball the lineman would defenently overpower the rugby players in a scrum and line backers and safeties would definently out tackle the rugby players

just to clear this up i am Canadian i do play rugby and football i do love both sports ( i also play basketball i hate baseball and NASCAR and soccer not a big fan of hockey) im not trying to offend other rugby players just stating facts dont knock it till you have tried it

Ok, well i don't know much, if anything about American Football so i'm not going to compare, simply inform people as to their lack of rugby knowledge.

There is always a huge debate about the physical contact in both sports, I play rugby as a Centre (inside and outside), and i wouldn't neccesarily say rugby players don't get hit hard. nor would i say that the pure intent of a rugby tackle is to bring the player down and force a turnover. infact, tackles can be aggressive, with intent on actually causing the person physical harm. For instance, players considered a threat will often be taken out so that they can't continue to play (like Johnny Wilkinson). Also, there is an unwritten law in rugby, being that if the ref doesn't see it, it's ok to do it. leading to people being stamped on in rucks and mauls, which wearing body armour may not be that bad, but in thin clothes and bare skin, 200lbs guys with inch long studs. paints a very different picture.

on to tactics. In Rugby, there is one team, they speak to the coach before the match start and during the half time. he tells them what they should try and do in both cases. During the match it is up to the captain to make all or the majority of the decisions. there is little time to discuss tactics and plays, which is why they are done in training and triggered by numbers, words, or in the case of line outs, hand signals. this keeps play fluid and there is always something happening throughout the game.

this leads on to the fitness issue. instead of having (i've heard there are) 4 teams in American football (please correct me if i am wrong) 2 attacking and 2 defensive. the one team has to play for 80 minutes, with a half time break obviously, with every player having to keep up with the pace of the game for the whole 80 mins. one player becoming tired or lacking in concerntration can jeopardise the game. whereas american football players get a lot more stoppage time and therefore don't really suffer from this. (if they do then how exactly can they be called ''athletes'')

I'm not going to argue with any NFL fans...it seems totally pointless. There are a few resonable Gridiron fans, but generally myopia abounds, as well as pathetic nationalsim.

Basically, NFL suffers from a credibility problem. Apart from North America, nobody else takes it seriously - WWF masquerading as a sport. Lots of huffing and puffing, lots of chest beating, lots of sexy lycra and shoulder pads...little in the way of substance.

That's how it's viewed.

There are some magnifiscent athletes in American Football, but their abilities are severely limited, or as NFL fans would put it, 'specialised'.

They do one thing and one thing only.

OK...fair enough.

But that's just it...the whole game of American Football seems drenched in such 'one dimensionalism' when it comes to such game playing skills.

Does NFL have any concept of a multi dimensional player? Could a NFL player run down the touchline one minute, have the skill to tackle a 260lb forward, or a 210lb winger the next, kick for field position a little later, and do ALL THAT, over and over for 80 minutes?

Mmmmm....

How would quarterback handle being at the bottom of a ruck with a couple of props and back row forwards on top of him? Or a wide reciever perhaps? Because while American football allows for offensive and defensive units, a rugby player does both jobs against big men and bigger.

And they do it for 80 minutes divided into 40 minute halves with very few stopages.

That's a truer description of a tough athlete...one who is able to endure repeated demands on his physical being over a sustained period of play, while demonstrating skill and decision making tactical acumen.

Oh, and to the person who questioned Lance Armstrongs place as one of the greatest athletes of all time, I say firstly; he's American...it's ok to recognize him. And secondly, The Tour de France is GENERALLY accepted THROUGHUT the world as one of the most physically demanding sporting events in existence.

Becuase tough isn't just about impacts and hits...tough is about mental and pysical stamina, mental and phyical toughness...get the picture?

It's a bit like a World Title Boxing match being limited to 4 rounds...it's just not the way it's done...it has no credibility. Nope, 12 rounds are needed to test the various facets of mental and pysical attributes that make up a champion.

Anyway, this is all gonna fall on deaf ears... inside of North America that is. Jeez I'm glad I'm aware of the world around me.

Jeez I'm glad I'm aware of the world around me.

a statement like that just proves that you arent as aware of the world as you think. assuming all north americans disagree with you, or that all of us are closed-minded, well doesn't that just seem a bit closed-minded itself?

i'm tired of the European closed-mindedness around here, the holier-than-thou attitude. im going to assume you know about as much about american football as i know about rugby. i know how its played and i've played it a select few times. that dosent really give me the ability to comment on it, and it shouldn't give you one either.

if i were to come in here and say "rugby sucks and its only played by stupid talentless pussies, I'd be wrong and i'd offend you guys. what makes you think its any different when you do it.

and don't you dare assume everyone around here is the same. just because a few people have commented harshly about rugby doesnt mean we all feel the same. if we were to judge a whole continent based on the actions of a few, i think it would break down about even.

so don't give me any of that "North Americans can't see beond their own continent" bullshit until you can say the same.

/rant end
